I think the best pokemon team to have is;

Serperior- Grass (Starter Pokemon)

Braviary- Flying

In my point of view, I never use legendaries for recreational battling, I use all the Pokemon i catch and train in the wild. So, first off, I'd choose either Serperior or Samurott. Mainly because Emboar is lame, has a crap movepool, and is another Fire/Fight type. I chose Samurott so I'd have a way around, and because everyone else I know chose for the Serperior.

Secondly, I'd choose Pokemon you can rely on. You do need a flying type to get around, so I'd agree with the person above and say Braviary. Braviary can learn good attacks, has a good base attack stat, and is just all around epic.

Next, I'd choose a weird type. Like a ghost, psychic, dragon, etc. I'd go in this case for a bug type, with dual poison type. Scolipede is an awesome Pokemon in the fact that it is just so cool looking. The fact that it learns epic attacks, and is ok in terms of attack and defense. It does have weaknesses, even though not many. I would either choose that or Pokemon like Chandelure or Jellicent. These Pokemon are epic type matchups of Ghost and Fire, and Water and Ghost, respectively. So, if you choose Serperior, use a Jellicent, but if you choose Samurott, use a Chandelure. This is basically because if you have heavy attackers on your team, having a Pokemon with a good special attack stat and a good movepool are good onsets to your team. Plus, the fact that Chandelure has the ability Flame Body, which helps hatch eggs faster. Plus, when it is attacked, it could cause a burn. Pair that up with attacks destined to burn your foe and the move Hex, which when used against an enemy with a status ailment does double damage, it really helps.

Then, I'd choose another strange-o type. In this case, I'd pick a psychic type. In this case, I'd team it up with a rock type. Weird match up? Yeah. BUT, I have on my team a Beheeyem and a Gigalith. My Gigalith knows Earthquake, and my Beheeyem has the ability, Telepathy, that can be used in forseeing an allies attack and avoid it. So, it can see an attack from my Gigalith, in this case Earthquake, and avoid taking damage. This also helps me in the fact that my Gigalith also knows Explosion, and I have a Excadrill which I sometimes swap out for my Gigalith, and Excadrill also knows Earthquake. If you choose Samurott, then you'd teach it Surf. If you use it in battle with Beheeyem, your golden. And Excadrill is Ground/Steel type, which is a good type matchup.

Finally, you need a Pokemon that is common around the game, and easy to catch. I chose the Pokemon Stoutland. It can be taught all of the fang attacks (Fire Fang, Ice Fang, etc.), and also taught it Helping Hand as a Herdier, so it is adept at battling with other Pokemon. You could also choose another Pokemon, Zebstrika. If you want an electric Pokemon on your team, then you'll be able to use it. It is pretty speedy, like Stoutland, and can dish out some damage. But, unlike Stoutland, it can't handle a lot of damage. SO if you want a defender, then pick the Normal type Stoutland, but if you want an Electric type, pick Zebstrika.

So, now I've given you my ideas. So, if you listen you'd have a team which looks like this:

1. Samurott/Serperior

2. Braviary

3. Scolipede/Chandelure/Jellicent

4. Beheeyem

5. Gigalith/Excadrill

6. Stoutland/Zebstrika

The Best Team, it is a very loose term

A great team is one that covers all weaknesses of the team so when it is put up against tough opponents it can succede, but there is no all out superior team as moves also come into effect as certain pokemon can learn different moves allowing a lot of variety into gameplay.

Also there are many different play styles, such as weakining the opponent, or even just trying to blitz the opponent with all out attacks. So tactics also come into play.

Personally I think that there is no real ultimate team, or best team as Pokemon is built so that a ten year old can beat it without any help if they train the pokemon and follow the advice given in the game, but for competitions there is no best team as well due to the variety in playing styles and tactics.

You should go for the pokemon that you like and feel that you can win with, otherwise its no fun as you play using someone elses team and not your own.
