Adult needs about 7 to 8 hours of sleep to achieve optimal efficiency during wake time.

Research found out that adult sleeping less than 5 hours a day might have an unhealthy life and an overall reduced lifespan (Due to health problems, suppressed immune system and work accident).

If an adult you are speaking about is in his/her 60++ years old, the normal sleep time will usually decrease by about 2 hours making it an average of 6 hours.

Elderly adult will have a shorter period of sleep time but an adult of 20++ years old will need 7 to 8 hours as mentioned.
