According to the producers, Baldwin's portrayal of Floyd Lawson was underwhelming and not what they had in mine. He was quickly released from the part and veteran character actor Howard McNear was given the now memorable role of Mayberry's friendly, eccentric barber.
2 Different people played Floyd. The main actors name was Howard Macnear. He had a stroke during one of the seasons (i'm not sure which). After the stroke you only saw him sitting down or standing in one place.
Floyd Lawson was the name of the character. He was played by two different actors (whose names escape me). On the show, Floyd's nephew, Warren, became Andy's deputy after Barney left.

The Andy Griffith Show - 1960 Floyd the Gay Deceiver 3-9 was released on: USA: 26 November 1962
Howard McNear played Floyd Lawson in all except one of the episodes of The Andy Griffith Show that featured the character (80 of 81). During the run of the show, McNear suffered a massive stroke, which rendered his left side and both legs unusable. When he returned to the show, he was always seen sitting down, only moving his right arm and hand, and spoke with labored and slurred speech. McNear died in January of 1969 from complications of stroke.
