The best answer is to not advise any child to count calories or to concern themselves with a scale unless recommended by their pediatrician. Eating disorders start in adolescence and begin as simple, normal and healthy attention to weight but can escalate very quickly into unhealthy obsession with weight, exercise and food. My child was eating 1,800 calories a day and dropped down to 98 pounds before we recognized a deadly and serious eating disorder. We are 10 months into recovery, it's grueling. Listen to your body and fuel it properly using how you feel as the guideline. Don't start counting calories or listening to anyone's advice about how many calories you need to consume until you discuss your exercise levels, health, lifestyle and body type with your doctor. a 13 year old male that is only a little bit active should get about 1500-2000 calories a day. If the 13 old male is more active( gets an hour or more of good exercise a day) should get between 2000-2500 calories a day.
