Yes, heroin was originally developed by doctors to be used as a pain medication, for which purpose it works extremely well, and it is still sometimes prescribed for terminally ill patients who are in severe pain - although there are now other, equally powerful pain killers such as dilaudid which may be prescribed instead. It was only later that heroin came into use as a recreational drug and became a controlled substance.

While heroin is illegal in most countries and can be very bad for you, I believe in Switzerland they have been holding very successful trials where they provided legal heroin as a means of harm reduction. The results were excellent. When providing users with a non-criminal source of the drug, they were able to function and go about their business, not having to cause problems for others and contribute to society. It proved the long-standing argument that if you legalize and control the source, should you desire there to be a lack of crime, that will be the result. If you control the source and want an increase in crime, that will be the result. What we need is responsible people controlling the source, dedicated to removing the crime out of drug usage.

Heroin is not legal in the USA...however morphine is...."Morphine" as it is commonly referred to, is morphine sulfate. Heroin is diacetyl morphine. That is, heroin is simply morphine with an acetyl molecule attached.

In terms of effects, they are exactly the same -- and medically interchangeable -- except for dosage. In fact, they are both converted to the same form of morphine when they get into the body.

The only significant difference between them is that the acetyl molecule allows heroin to cross the blood-brain barrier more quickly than ordinary morphine. The result is that, in terms of dosage, heroin is about three times stronger than morphine. That is, one grain of heroin equals about three grains of morphine. Otherwise, they are identical and there is no significant difference that would justify heroin being completely illegal...
