After you beat the elite four you will be transported back to your house, and your mom will say prof elm wants to give you something so go to his lab and pick up the pass that lets you go on the boat. fly to olivine city go to the harbor talk to the sailor guy in front of the gate and when you get on the boat a man will run into you and say his grandaugthers missing and for you to find her go to the captain of the ship and you'll find the little girl annoying him. now talk to her and she will tell you to play hide n seek with her. find the girl and you will be transported to the grandfather and he will give you the steel coat

∙ 14y agoIn order to obtain a Metal Coat you MUST beat the Elite Four. Once you have done that, go to Olivine City and abord the SS ship south of Olivine. In there you'll save the captain's daughter or something and then he will give you a Metal Coat. But there is another way to get a Metal Coat and that is by getting them from a wild Magnemite and you don't have to beat the Elite Four to get it off Magnemite's. Now, getting them off Magnemite is extremely rare and I mean extremely. It's only about a 1.5% chance of getting one with Metal Coat attached.
And if it makes you angry trying to find it it's normal because it took me 4 and a half hours to get one and I caught 289 of those stupid Magnemite's! But eventually I found it and when I did i was happier then when Italian's see pasta!
Note: I am Italian lol but yea this also works for Gold and Crystal as well.

By a gold Steelix I assume you're referring to a shiny Steelix. Shiny Pokemon are extremely rare, only 1 out of 8192 wild Pokemon is shiny. In Gold, Silver, or Crystal, Steelix can only be found by trading an Onix holding a Metal Coat. You can get the Metal Coat from a gentleman on the S. S. Aqua after you've beaten the Elite Four. Wild Magnemites also have an 8% chance of holding one, if you can't wait until then. Trading an Onix with a Metal Coat is also the only way to obtain a Steelix in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, in these games you can get a Metal Coat from wild Magnemites or Magnetons (5% chance), and you also find one in New Mauville. The only way for your Steelix to be shiny, unfortunately, is if the Onix you evolve it from is also shiny. Onix are fairly common in GSC, and can be found in Union Cave, Victory Road, or Silver Cave, and also in Rock Tunnel once you get to Kanto. However, to get one in RSE you'd have to trade it over from FireRed or LeafGreen, look for them in Rock Tunnel and Victory Road. Good luck finding a shiny Onix!
