Send it to Sony straight away cos if you don't they will ask why you waited so long and they wont give you a new one and make sure the game is out of the system when you turn it off cos it will be stuck in the system forever and all your saved data will be gone ( You will know if the ps3 system has overheated because you Will get a red-yellow flashing light )
It wont work because it overheats. Otherwise, its because the system is full of dust on the inside :D x
will make it quick and simple. Ps3 overheats sometimes because its running fast and people dont clean the vents or store ps3 in closet or closed spaces where it overheats. When it overheats it melts the solder on the mother board which solders 2 different companants into single via solder bridge. Solution ?! you can pay ps3 people like 120$ to fix it for you but sometimes they send you brand new one and you loose your hard drive with all the saves. Better Solution ?! Do it your self all you need is a philips screw driver take ps3 apart and get to mother board you need soldering gun to unsolder that soldering bridge and it will work just fine. Step by step guidance is provided all over the web on youtube ect.
The yellow light of death is when a solid yellow LED light shows up on your PS3. It is extremely rare for this to happen, but if it does there are ways to fix it, if you Google it. This will only happen if your PlayStation 3 overheats or the hard drive fails. If it overheats, it automatically will shut it's self off. But that usually doesn't happen because it comes equipped with a cooling system.
a few hours, but dont risk it... u dont wanna wreck your ps3 theyre 2 kewl for that The new Slim PS3 are very slow to overheat because of some of the changes to the hardware, but the never had a failure rate that would limit play to only a few hours. Sony would have to replace every machine under warranty that had failed. A link to the Wikipedia on the PS3 has been added under related links.
It wil shut off.

I dont know about the first part of your question (Did not understand anything) But your PS3 overheats when you play for 4 hours straiight and if you play for 5 hours straight you ps3 can explode! not into fire but it will explode inside and then it wont work again
It has too much hardware for the fan size. Try laying it on its side if it's laying down. Puting it sideways will help vent air. If it still overheats, blow a fan on it while you play. Alternatively, just don't play as much. Or, you could buy a snap-on cooling extension.

take it back and get a replacement. A new ps3 should not do that. That's what happens when you purchase a used PS3 just because you want one that plays PS2 games. There are plenty of great PS3 games out so why buy a used machine with half the harddrive size for the same price you would pay for a new PS3 slim 120 GB model. In fact pay the extra $50 and get a 250 GB model. The original question was asked in Nov 2009 so it almost had to be a used PS3.

Unlike the PS3, the Xbox 360 after running for a while tends to get very hot. When running for a long time, the system heats up and possibly overheats. It is alo extremely loud when in use.
Each car overheats at a different temperature you need to look up and find out on the internet
Shorts out and overheats or has too much resistance for some other reason and overheats.
