Well, as far as I am concerned, John Kirby was a lawyer for Nintendo. He defended Nintendo from the accusations from Universal due to Donkey Kong's similarity to King Kong. This led to everybody's favorite pink puffball, Kirby, having a name as homage to John. I hope that answers your question.
