after mining it, u just put it on the block right next to a mechanical thing or leave a trail of it leading to mechanical thing. (mechanical thing like pressure plate, button, lever.) and for redstone torches its just like regular torches but redstone instead of coal on top of the sticks. some things can be crafted with them like clocks and compasses. hope i helped, but if i didn't, re-post ur question to get a new answer.
