If you have Windows 7, you right click on The Sims 3 icon on the desktop and press
'Open file location'. Then press TS3 or TS3.exe (it will come up as either of those).

The game will still recognize anything you've installed via the launcher. For convenience, you can just create a shortcut to that exe file on your desktop and start the Sims that way. You'll still need to start the launcher to install sims3.packs but you could completely avoid the launcher if you learn how to make s3packs into packages and how to install them.
