Just make sure that you have enough controllers and then when your in a game you will see something on the screen and it should say PRESS START TO JOIN. All you do then is do what it says. (PRESS THE START BUTTON TO JOIN)

Turn on the second controller and sign in. It should give the option to add player to the game. For most T.V.s then you will need to purchase an HDMI cable, and set it up instead of the original cable to hook it up to the T.V. Please note that spilt screen mode is not available for Standard Definition TVs. If you have a HD TV please make sure your xbox360 is setup correctly. Go to Console settings>Display Settings> 720p/1080p(Whichever is relevant for your screen)

yes you need live and in fact you need live gold membership to play co-op with someone else on a different screen but no if you are talking about split screen if you are the only profile on your xbox just make another profile (doesn't need to be xbox live) and have the second controller sign in to that profile
