Chao can be obtained in either Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2. To get one simply find the Chao garden in that particular game.
In Sonic Adventure you just go into the hotel in Station Square and go up the left elevator. This will bring you to the Station Square Chao garden. The first time you enter, there will be two chao eggs inside. To hatch them press X or B to grab them and to hold them for a while and let go. The egg will hatch and a chao will come out! Congrats you now have your first chao!
In Sonic Adventure 2 simply find a chao box in a stage (its a blue box), open it and grab the key. Then finish the stage you're on and you will warp to the Chao garden. Go inside the garden and follow the same procedure described above.
