Try closing other programs to free up RAM. RAM is the main influence of how minecraft runs. It is recommended that you have at least 3GB of RAM on a 64-bit computer.

You can also try turning the render distance down by press ESC and then going to options > video settings and then clicking on render distance until it gets to short or tiny, which ever works for you best.

You could also put your minecraft worlds onto a Partition on the RAM to make them load quicker using a program called RAMDisk then create a symbolic link between the two folders (.minecraft saves and the RAM partition) using some command prompt.

Running a server then playing off the server makes minecraft work a little better. Just open the server file and then in the minecraft ip box for multiplayer type in your computer's name (EG Chris-PC or John-PC) where 'Chris' and 'John' is you would put your computers username
