When Jack held his feast on the beach it was intended to lure some of the biguns away from Ralph and the conch. Jack wanted the event to seem fun, casual and the open air situation on the beach, close to Ralph's camp, projected that image. The beach camp was a temporary affair, as Jack himself said. Castle Rock was Jack's preferred permanent headquarters. It was his fortress, easily defensible, totally removed from the original camp on the island. It was the castle, Jack's throne room, at the heart of his kingdom.
