This is a controversy among Twilight fans everywhere.
Ok, so here's some background. When vampires are "Born" or "Created", they crave human blood. It is all they think about. But a vampire named Carlisle Cullen decided he was not going to, "Be a monster" as he once put it. So he decided to become a "vegetarian" vampire, and only drink the blood of animals.
One day, he found Edward Cullen dying of Spanish influenza and turned him into a vampire by biting him. Vampires live forever, so by turning Edward into one, it was a way of saving him from dying.
Edward could read Carlisle's mind when he turned into a vampire. So he knew the exact reasoning why Carlisle chose the "vegetarian" lifestyle. But he did not like living this way, although he did not want to be a "monster". So he left Carlisle to live elsewhere. He only killed and drank the blood of villans (For example: robbers, muggers, etc;). Note: In the book, a person does not become a vampire by being drained of their blood. It can only come of being bitten by a vampire.
But after a while, he returned to Carlisle and became a true "Vegetarian". He did not drink a human's blood since.
So, here is the controversy: Some people think Edward Cullen is NOT a villan, because he is a vegetarian and he only killed bad people.
But other people think he IS a villan because he killed people.
Now you know the whole story. Stephanie Meyer did not portray Edward to be a villan in the books, though. Edward ends up being one of the "Good" characters, always protecting the clumsy Bella Swan from danger along with Bella's werewolf best friend, Jacob Black. But you decide: Is Edward a Villian or not?
