The Hunger Game inspired district 12 for a few reasons. The first reason is- On the day of the reaping,Katniss's little sister, only 12 years old has defeated all odds and got chosen to be a tribute in the 74th annual Hunger Games. Right away, Katniss springs into action and volunteers for her as if immediately. This action completely inspired and touched District 12. The second thing that inspired District 12 is that not one but two people-Katniss and Peeta had won the 74th annual HUnger Games while at the same time, over powering the capitol!
The United States no longer exists in The Hunger Games. After the apocalypse, the US is reformed and is called Panem. Instead of states, there used to be thirteen districts, but there are now twelve.
There are twelve districts. Katniss Everdeen belongs to District twelve. Every year there is The Hunger Games. One boy and one girl from each district compete until the finish. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark get picked from the reaping. They fall in love and win The HUnger Games.
In the Hunger Games, the Capitol issued the Treaty of Treason, which states that as a reminder of the rebellion, each of twelve districts would send one boy and one girl to compete in the Hunger Games and fight to the death in an arena on television.
The Hunger Games are held by the Capitol as a reminder to the districts of their rebellion and how badly it ended for them. Because of the rebellion, they are forced to kill 23 children every year.
It started when each district rebelled against the Capitol, so as a punishment and to remind them of their wrong-doing, the Capitol required a boy and a girl from each districts to fight in the Hunger Games.

The Dark Days are the days in which the thirteen districts of Panem rose up and fought against the dictating Capitol. However, they did not succeed in defeating them, and district thirteen was destroyed, therefore the Capitol started the yearly Hunger Games, where they remind the twelve districts of what they went through, telling them not to do it again.
