It can be any amount of cylinders, there are almost no cars that have stock 1000hp or more and the only one I can think of is the Bugatti Veyron which has 16 cylinders
There are so many other factors that go into engine horsepower other than cylinders, Is it turbocharged, supercharged or naturally aspirated? Fuel? What is the compression ratio?
You can modify an engine with only 4 cylinders to put out 1000hp if you modify it enough.
Top fuel dragsters produce as much as 5000 hp from an eight cylinder engine.
