I would say as soon as possible because whiplash is generally just a temporary bruising of the muscles in the neck. It causes pain in the neck from this bruising but it always goes away soon. If you have more serious injuries you need to find out about it and have it treated. This would include problems with the vertebrae which may or may not include need for surgery.
