Mentally healthy would refer to an individual who does not suffer from psychological thoughts and feelings which cause a moderate level of distress or impairment to their daily functioning. Essentially a person who is mentally healthy is a person who can operate "normally" (without impairment) on a day to day bases despite the issues and psychological discomforts they may have.
For example: Everyone has obsessive-compulsive characteristics. But the difference between these characteristics and a sufferer of OCD, is that normally we are capable of operating while experiencing these characteristics (such as simply ignoring them until they pass or deal with the anxiety until it passes). On the other hand, a person with OCD is incapable of operating with these characteristics as to them they could appear to be demands that must be fulfilled and they cannot continue with their daily life until they are met.
A generally upbeat and realistic outlook on life would be the number one thing. Ease in social situations. Friends. Good relationships with relatives. No need for mood-altering with drugs. Flexible attitudes. Normalcy, in other words.
A person does not have any mental conditions, such as depression or schizophrenia. A mentally healthy person will also think clearly and rational.

Because if you are mentally sick, then you are just sick and need help. If you are unhealthy mentally, then that will effect your performance in school, work, relationships with friends, family, boyfriends/girlfriends, husbands/wives, fiances, etc. And if you are not mentally well, that means you need a BIG attitude adjustment. Because your behavior is affected by it as well.

Being fit consist of healthy living healthy eating and exercise. That is a great start to fitness. Being in shape can change how you feel physically and mentally.
Being kept in a cage can mentally effect zoo animals negatively. They can become depressed, or even aggressive. In some cases they can begin to exhibit odd behaviors that are not natural to them.
It is important because if your not mentally healthy you can get sick or other stuff.
They are good role models to the younger generation about being healthy mentally, physically,spiritually,and emotionally.
