Friedhelm Hillebrand, experimented with number of characters around 1985. He tried random sentences and questions and then counted the number of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and spaces. It seemed to always come short of 160 characters. Not sure if that would be enough he tried comparing it to other things and sure enough text found on postcards at that time was averaging on 150 characters.

What is the Longest text message sent?

A text message is a text composed with a limited amount of characters (letters, numbers, symbols, and spaces). Usually 160 characters is the max for one message, after that it turns into two messages, etc. I have a smart phone. Texting on a smart phone usually sends just one message despite how much you've typed. When you compose a new text message on a smart phone, it tells you how many characters the text message is and how many messages you would be sending. I just sent 2,525 character 17 page message to one person. For VZW (Verizon Wireless) Members, The max text message you can send is 1000 Characters. (to other VZW members and 160 to Non VZW Members)

Why do you send a telegram?

Actually, these days, you don't. In their day (beginning in the late 1840s), telegrams were very important. In fact, the telegraph was considered an amazing invention, since it transmitted short messages by Morse code hundreds of miles away, often in less than an hour. In the world before the internet, sending and receiving a message in the same day was considered a miracle, since it had taken days to send information by horse (or even by train) prior to the arrival of the telegraph. By the late 1800s, the telegraph had become an essential means of communication. Journalists relied on it to send stories back to their newspaper. And members of the public were excited to receive a telegram, since it usually meant important news, like an upcoming wedding or the fact that a family member from a distant city was arriving soon (or sometimes, a message that someone had just died). Messages were charged by the word, and this meant information was now considered valuable and worth paying for. But when technology improved (first radio, then TV, satellite, and finally the internet), the idea of sending messages by Morse code over telegraph wires lost its specialness. It was now much too slow to wait for a telegram, and there were many better and faster ways to send messages over long distances. One by one, telegraph companies went out of business and fewer people were receiving telegrams. For example, the Telegraph Service in India closed in July 2013: for more than 160 years, the telegraph was an important way to communicate in many parts of rural India. But in a world of smart-phones and instant messaging, few people seem eager to send or receive telegrams any more.

Are there any SMS plans available which have per character charge?

Veery unlikely. A SMS message is sent in 'blocks' of up to 160 characters - and are charged at the service-provider's 'standard' rate. Long messages (that are more than 160 characters) are charged in multiples of the standard text rate. For example - if text messages were charged at 10p - and your mesage went over 160 characters (but less than 320) - you would be charged 20p

What does split sms texts mean?

Most of the mobile phones allow for text messages of 144 to 160 characters only. If you type a longer sms, it allows you to type it as one text, but the receiver gets it split into multiple messages. The breaking up of long texts that your phone does, is splitting sms text. Hope this helps. Thanks
