The longest instant message ever sent was 100,000 characters long and was sent in a chain message. Most message boards only allow but so many characters so the max most people can send in one message is a 160 characters but this one was sent in a bunch of chains because it went past the max amount of characters.
The length of an iMessage is technically limited by the amount of data that can be stored in a message packet, which is typically around 64 KB. This can equate to roughly 7,000 to 8,000 characters, depending on the content (e.g., text, emojis, images). However, iMessage automatically splits long messages into multiple packets, allowing for longer messages to be sent and received seamlessly. Therefore, the "longest" iMessage sent would theoretically be a continuous stream of messages that collectively exceed the usual character limit.
If your phone does not revert to SMS and the receiver also has imessage there will be no data charges. The apple server controls imessage in this case.
