The longest instant message ever sent was 100,000 characters long and was sent in a chain message. Most message boards only allow but so many characters so the max most people can send in one message is a 160 characters but this one was sent in a bunch of chains because it went past the max amount of characters.
If your phone does not revert to SMS and the receiver also has imessage there will be no data charges. The apple server controls imessage in this case.

You use iMessage which is available on the latest iOS upgrade. iMessage operates via wifi, so you must be in reach of a wifi network in order for your iMessage to be sent.
As one of your messages has been delivered as an iMessage
To send a message to a regular phone using iMessage, simply open the Messages app on your Apple device and start a new message. Enter the recipient’s phone number or email address. If the recipient does not have iMessage, your message will be sent as an SMS automatically. Ensure your device has an active internet connection for iMessage to work properly.
Apple's iMessage allows senders to confirm that a text message has been delivered, this service is only available on Apple's devices and to work fully both user and sender must be using wifi otherwise the iMessage is sent as a text message. iMessage is a free service (unless message has been sent as a text).
When you receive pictures on your iPhone, they may appear as both regular SMS/MMS messages and iMessages due to the settings of the sender's device and network. If the sender is using an Apple device and has iMessage enabled, the image will be sent as an iMessage, which uses data instead of SMS. However, if there’s an issue with the internet connection or the sender is not using iMessage, the image may be sent as a regular SMS/MMS. This dual approach ensures that the message is delivered regardless of network conditions.
Yes. IMessage is not the same as the text messaging you have in something like a Samsung phone. iMessage only works with other Apple devices that have iMessage.
If you have iMessage installed you can only iMessage other iDevices that has iMessage installed on them. If someone has an iPad 2 but not with 3G but has an iPhone, then the iMessage will go there iPhone.
