The recommended time is 6 months, but some people have no trouble taking it out in 2. I'm had mine pierced for about 9 months now, and I took it out for the first time after about two months. Everyone is different, if the piercing still looks brand new (e.g; red, swollen) then you shouldn't take it out. But techically it all depends on the piercing itself.
