That depends on your anatomy. Once the swelling goes down (usually 2 weeks) go to your piercer and they measure your tongue and fit you with the proper bar. Sometimes, the place will fit you for free if you got the piercing from them. Call and ask

Nothing. The initial barbell you get is long because it has to accommodate for swelling. Its the same kind of barbell, just longer than what youre gonna wear once the swelling is gone

Well I bet that smarts, the problem here is the barbell is too long for the piercing and needs to be shortened. Failure to have the barbell shortened once the swelling goes down can lead to serious dental damage. The tear in your tongue is a tear in your tongue, it will heal but get the shorter barbell in or you will tear your tongue further.

The barbell is a bit too long, but that's due to the swelling. Once the swelling is gone (about 2 weeks) go back and get a shorter barbell, this will relieve the discomfort under your tongue.

Plastics are never used for the initial tongue piercing if the service is provided by and experienced professional body piercer. Plastics can be used once the swelling had gone down and the tongue is ready for it's step down barbell (usually about two weeks after the piercing has been done). Plastics cause a false sens of security and people tend to bite and flex the barbell, this alone can prolong the healing period. If you want it done right go with the metal barbell do your aftercare and once the swelling has eased you can go to a plastic barbell, but be warned that should you have issues the metal barbell should be put back in to the piercing.

Actually you can move the Barbell (not a ring) up and down once the piercing is done, however playing with the jewelelry in a fresh tongue piercing will irritate the piercing and promote swelling.

OK simply put a tongue piercing once done will have localized swelling for the first two weeks, once the swelling has eased the barbell may seem some what longer (good time to get the barbell stepped down to protect the teeth). Once the step down barbell is in the piercing will remain slightly swelled for the next 4 weeks. So over all, so long as you don't get a cold* (*this will prolong the healing time) you are looking at a time period of 6 weeks to attain a light heal. This is far from considered healed, professional piercers consider a piercing seasoned and fully healed when the piercing is a full year old.

Well it could happen but the tongue would need to be really hyper extended for this to happen. Generally most folks "chicken up" a bit when the piercing is about to be done and that's generally when the clamp is being applied and they tend to pull the tongue back a bit before it's actually clamped. Now chances are really good that if you think the piercing is too far back it could be because the swelling has gone down and you're noticing how long the initial barbell is (trust me it's long). Once a shorter barbell in put into the piercing it won't feel that far back, the barbell will center on the tongue a bit better and will be much more comfortable.

Sure Bioplast was designed for the body piercing industry and is fine once the piercing is healed. Some piercers will use it right from the start, but I am a bit old school so I like to get the piercing healed with a metal barbell ( the flexing can prevent the piercing from draining correctly and clients tends to chew on a flexible barbell which isn't a smart move ). Just keep in mind anything flexible will eventually fail from wear and tear, so keep your shorter metal barbell handy when you travel, just in case.
