What is Winchester proof steel?

Introduced around 1940, Winchester Proof Steel is the alloy used by Winchester to manufacture it's firearms. It replaced nickel steel, used in the early production Winchester 94's to withstand the power of the first 'main stream' smokeless powder rifle cartridge - the .30 WCF, now known as the .30-30. Note, however, that the 94 Winchester was intoduced in .30 WCF a year after the production of blackpowder 94s. Winchester Proof is stronger than nickel steel, and holds blueing better. The nickel in nickel steel made blueing flake off of recievers and barrels of Winchester rifles over long periods of time. Winchester introduced Proof Steel in 1931, and began using it for the Model 94 in April of 1932. "Proof Steel" is a chrome-moly alloy.

Which hand gun has the markings of the letter 'u' and a crown symbol?

What you are describing is a proof mark- evidence that the firearm was tested by the appointed government agency, and was found safe to fire. The Crown over letter U was the proof mark used by the Suhl, East Germany proof house after `1950. It will be on any gun made in that country in that time frame.

What means Winchester proof-mark W over P?

It means 'Winchester Proofed'! Around 1903 or there abouts, all barrels installed by the Winchester factory started were stamped with a 'WP"within an oval on top of the barrel at the breech end just before the receiver, it was added the the top of the receiver where the barrel screws into it around 1905 when all Winchester's were stamped in both places. If a gun smith outside of the factory ordered a new or different caliber barrel from the factory to replace the 'original' one, it would be shipped with only a 'P' stamped onto the barrel instead of the 'WP'. This is a sure sign that the barrel on any Winchester was a replacement, and though a "Winchester" barrel it was not installed by the factory. Additionally, any rifle returned to the factory for barrel replacement AFTER 1905 would have one installed with the 'WP' on it, irregardless if the gun was originally made BEFORE 1903/05. For collectors this is an obvious indicator that the barrel is a replacement IF the serial number indicates it was manufactured BEFORE 1903. Hope this clears things up for you....................Regards, Marty

What company does an eagle over crown proof represent for shotguns?

I have a Walther PPK 9mm Kurtz pistol with an eagle over crown mark. I believe your shotgun must be German.

Why would the serial number on a model 94 be knurled out then stamped over with wraco?

If a Winchester was returned to the factory for repair which required replacement to the frame it was common to remove the ser.no. and replace it with the letters WRACO, Winchester Repeating Arms Co., Also, unauthorized parties re-sold guns not under contract with Winchester, when these guns showed up at the factory it was re stamped with WRACO. Starting about 1905 Winchester's leaving the factory would be stamped on the top of the frame and the top of the barrel at the juncture of the frame & barrel with the letters WP inside an oval. If your gun was manufactured BEFORE 1905 AND has the WRACO stamp over the s/n then in all probability it'll have the WP proof mark too. Regards, Marty
