The proof mark of the crown over the letter R signifies the proof house of East German,Suhl. This has been used since 1950 and means repair proof. The proof of the star over the letters AE usually signify the smokeless powder proof for firearms from France.
I have a Walther PPK 9mm Kurtz pistol with an eagle over crown mark. I believe your shotgun must be German.
Liege, Belgium Superior proof mark A smokeless powder proof
What you are describing is a proof mark- evidence that the firearm was tested by the appointed government agency, and was found safe to fire. The Crown over letter U was the proof mark used by the Suhl, East Germany proof house after `1950. It will be on any gun made in that country in that time frame.
1850-1870
Means it was proof tested by Winchester.
One that was made in Belgium. What you see is a proof mark. In many European countries, firearms must be submitted to the government proof house for testing (being "proven" safe to shoot). The crown above the letter R was a mark of the Proof House of Liege, Belgium that went into use in 1852 for handguns. Beyond that, it does not tell us anything about WHO made it, or what it is. Sort of like the Underwriter's Lab sticker on an electrical appliance. Sticker does not tell me what the appliance is, just that it is safe to use.
That is a Winchester proof mark.
Mostl likely proof or maker marks.
