I don't think it a question of "What is the best." It's more like what can you afford. Pellet guns or should I say Rifles come in different calibers. The most common is 177 but they also come in 20, 22, 25, 45 and 50 Caliber. The latter Pellet rifles can cost upwards of $1000. Hunting is usually done in the 22-caliber range with 177 being used as a target rifle or small rodent rifle.
There are several excellent rifles made that will do the job. Crosman Beeman and Gamo are but a few of the more common accessible air rifles available, but more expensive rifles can be had like a "Feinwerkbau 700 Aluminum" for a mere $2915.95. It will do the job but might be out of most peoples price range. Even Beeman makes some excellent rifles around the $500 range. But I think you can find one around the $150 easily through the web. Or a sporting goods shop near you. Always look for sales. The sale price at sporting goods shops is usually the price that you can always find on the web as the regular price. ( You just have to pay shipping.)
My suggestion is look on the web first. Just put in "Air Rifles" and watch how many net locations come up. I usually use { See the link below }.as a gauge of the right price when looking for Air Rifles. I also read the reviews before selecting a rifle. I try to do as much research before I spend my money.
One last suggestion: I find that Spring Rifles (Single Shot Break Barrel Rifles) and PCP (Precharged Pneumatic ) rifles are better for hunting than C02 (Target) rifles.
