Scrooge is with the Ghost of Christams Yet To Come. He has seen the visions of the future and now is at the graveyard. He speaks to the Ghost ""Before I draw nearer to that stone to which you point," said Scrooge, "answer me one question. Are these the shadows of the things that Will be, or are they shadows of things that May be, only?" He is asking for assurances that what he has seen can be changed if he changes and are not certain

He dislikes the visons the ghost forces him to see and this causes Scrooge to beg for removal from the scenes and then use teh lamp extinguisher that the ghost carries to put of the flame that surounds the ghost
They remind him of statements he has made or action he has taken when he questions why others do the same i.e. When seeing the children (Want and Ignorance) beneath the robes of the Ghost of Christmas Present Scrooge is shocked by their sickly and malnourished condition He asks the ghost, Have they no resource, have they no one to care for them?" The ghosts reply was Scrooge's retort to the two gentlemen in stave one who asked for a donation to help the sick and needy at this time of year, "Are there no prisons, are there no work houses and the treadmill, is that still gainfully employed?"
Scrooge initially disowns Fred, cutting him of without a penny as he mainly blames Fred for the death in childbirth of his much loved sister Fan. Scrooge is also annoyed by Fred's marrying someone who herself has no money. When the Ghost of Christmas Present takes Scrooge to Fan's bedside he sees himself beg for her life. She falls into a coma as Scrooge sits holding her hand. he glares at the baby as it cries and leaves the room. When he'd gone Fan in a faint voice still speaks to Scrooge, begging him to take care of her son. Scrooge never knew this and breaks down seeing the events. He knows he has let his sister down. In stave 5 Scrooge goes to Fred's home to beg forgiveness for his folly; Fred is of course delighted to see his old uncle and welcomes him to his home for Christmas Dinner.
He goes on Christmas Day to beg Fred and Freds wife's forgiveness for being such a wicked miserly old man
