You can deactivate your account almost instantly however, if you try and log in again you have automatically got your account back. That is why it is essential you leave it for 2 weeks. When two weeks has passed your account will permanently be deactivated.

I can say this with confidence, because I used it myself. On your "Home" page on Facebook, look at the top right hand side to see an arrow next to the "Home" button.
