To cancel a Facebook account, log on to your account and click 'Account' at the top right corner of the screen. In the drop-down menu, click on "Account Settings." When the page loads, scroll to the bottom and click on "Deactivate." That will take you to a new page where you can fill out the information and click on "Deactivate my account."
I believe it takes two weeks for Facebook to remove your account. If you log on during that time, I believe your account is reactivated and removal is stopped.
In the upper right hand corner of your front page there is a button labeled "account", click on that button and then click on the settings button. At the bottom of the list there is a line that says "Deactivate my account" click on deactivate.
