While Ichigo at first obtains both his Shinigami powers, and a zanpaktou by absorbing Rukia's powers, it is never made clear if that sword is in fact Zangetsu, or simply a side effect of the transfer of powers. Making it speculative as to whether or not this sword was Zangetsu.
What can be verified in both the manga and anime, is that the name Zangetsu is first used directly after Ichigo's trial in the shattered shaft. This is also the first time we see the materialization of Zangetsu in the form of a older man dressed in black.
While the difference in appearance can be explained by the difference between the swords normal state and it's shikai state. We have never seen Zangetsu's normal state since the name was first used.

Ichigo doesn't get Zangetsu in an episode. He gets it in a time skip when he is training with Kisuke Urahara to get stronger to go to Soul Society and save Rukia.
