The company that created VMK, also known as Sulake, started to charge Disney for running the site. Regardless of the popularity of the site, Disney shut it down because they did not want to have to pay for it. Their excuse was that it was originally supposed to be temporary, but everyone knows they are just not willing to pay for the site to stay up. It closed May 21, 2008. Even after protests at Disney World and Disneyland, changes have not occured.
it doesnt even make sense that disney couldnt just pay for the game. i read about it in Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark and wanted to play it. now i am dissapointed that they shut the game down :(

sometimes there is a problem in vmk and hosts have to close the game for a while vmk closed so it's not gonna work anymore now
3d avatar, I don't think...Dragonfable and AdventureQuest are under 13 I believe. VMK would've worked but it shut down. Try ROBLOX, it's G rated and fun. ROBLOX also has 3d avatars.
Your game shuts down when someone (usually the Admins or the Owner) decide to shut it down for what ever reason they though fit. Also there are scripts that can shut it down or people can hack and shut it down.
It was temporarily shut down to protest SOPA and PIPA.
