When a block of stone is destroyed with a pickaxe, it drops one block of cobblestone per stone block destroyed; to answer, you will need to craft any tier of pickaxe - wooden, iron, gold or diamond all destroy stone blocks - and find either exposed stone blocks in the world, or dig through dirt blocks until you find stone blocks.
The next thing you'll need is a crafting table (4x4 grid of wooden planks in your inventory crafting section) in order to actually create a furnace. See sources/related links for the crafting recipe.
Smelt Cobblestone in your furnace.

When you mine regular 'smooth' stone, you get cobblestone. This can be converted back to smooth stone by smelting it in a furnace.
You mine below soil and sooner or later you will hit stone. But it is also in caves. This will only get you cobblestone, however, in order to get smoothstone (regular stone), you must bake it in a furnace.

Smelt cobblestone in a furnace. Place the cobblestone in the top square of the furnace. Then, put fuel in the square underneath the cobblestone. (Types of fuel: Coal, wood, lava buckets & blaze rods. Coal is the most common fuel.)
iron pick axe
Yes. The 'stone' had pieces missing.
Well first you have to have the following things: Stone pickaxe ( or higher ) Furnace Coal or wood ( To go in the furnace ) ...Preferably coal Spade ( optional ) 1. Dig through the dirt/sand (optional with your spade) until you hit stone 2. Mine the stone until you find iron 3. Mine the iron and return to the top 4. Put the iron into the furnace with coal/wood at the bottom 5. In the out section there should be iron bars :) ( Called Iron ingots ) Hope I helped :)
You need an iron pickaxe. Also, you need a stone pickaxe to mine iron and a wooden pickaxe to mine stone.
Iron ore looks like a stone block with tan dots in it. You can't get it unless you mine it with a stone pickaxe or higher but it won't work if you try to mine it with a wooden pickaxe. Then you melt the iron ore in a furnace to get iron ingot which you can craft with.
