Tweed caps came about in the 1500's. In 1571 Act of Parliament ordained that on Sundays and holidays all males over the age of 6, except for nobles and person's of degree, were to wear caps made of English wool or be fined 3 farthings a day. This was to promote the wool trade and became the working man's cap.
