You have to stick with the originals: Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. They're rare and expensive if you can find one. They're for the original Game Boy, so if you don't have one, GET ONE. I really like Emerald for the Game Boy Advance, LeafGreen/FireRed for the GBA is fun, too. HeartGold/SoulSilver is definatley worth your money. I like Platinum, but it's really not much different than Pearl/Diamond, exept for my favorite part: The Distortion World. Black/White is cool, but they kinda ran out of ideas for new Pokemon. I'm hoping Black and White 2 will fix the past's mistakes, but that doesn't come out until August. ALL are worth your money, but Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow are the best. It only has the original 150 Pokemon, so it has than nystolgic feel.
