I do not know if this will help you or not, but I am playing Pokemon Emerald. I have pressed any button that might work, but I just could not get it. When you mentioned that you cannot get the enter or return key to work for you, I switched my start key to the E key. I have finally opened the menu, and can access the bag. In shot, maybe making the start key something other than the enter key might help. Good luck.
