If you are trying to create the perfect Pokemon team, good luck. There is no one set perfect Pokemon. When trying to become as good as you can get, it all comes right down to several things:
1) type
2) moveset/breeding for moves
3) level
4) EV and IV training/stats
Now, to explain these things in the best of detail would take hours, so here is a bit of a quick and easy guide.
First of all, you should carry one Pokemon of each type in your party (one water, one electric, one fire, one grass...) You should never have two Pokemon of the same type. This allows you to cover your weaknesses and raise your offenses in every battle, so long as you can remember which Pokemon is super effective against yours, and which type your Pokemon is super effective against. (Fire is super effective against grass, grass is super effective against water, water is super effective against fire, etc.)
The second thing you should take into consideration is your Pokemon's moveset. You won't go very far in Pokemon simply by leveling a Pokemon up and only using moves that the Pokemon would automatically learn. Instead, you should buy/find tms and teach them to your Pokemon, because they will become much stronger. You can also breed for better moves. You can place two Pokemon of the same egg group in the day care and try to make a super baby Pokemon. When breeding, you should know this. The male Pokemon determines the moveset, and the female Pokemon determines what species of Pokemon the baby is. So, if you are worried about "wasting a TM" on one Pokemon, remember that the TM could potentially be recycled by breeding if you teach it to the dad. Now a little about egg groups. Egg groups are sort of related to the Pokemon's type. Two Pokemon from the same egg group can breed, even if they are not the same species. For instance, an absol can breed with a pikachu to learn some really awesome electric moves, but it cannot breed with a lotad. You can go to www.serebii.net to learn which Pokemon is in which egg group.
Thirdly, train your Pokemon! A team of different types would do very well against any trainer in the game, but if you battle online, most of your challengers will knock out any weak Pokemon will level 100s. It takes a while, but you will dominate with a trained team.
Lastly, you need to know about Ev and Iv stats. IV stats are stats that a Pokemon is born with, and you really can't do anything about them except try to search for a Pokemon that has the best stats. Ev training is relatively easy to master however. EV stands for effort values, and this refers to how much effort YOU put into your Pokemon's training. For instance, a Pokemon trained by battling will be much, MUCH stronger than a Pokemon that is at a high level only from rare candies or being trained in the day care. Also, a Pokemon hatched from an egg will be a better Pokemon to EV train than one you catch in the wild, because the stats are the same. Therefore you can raise them higher with a baby Pokemon. This also means that if you are starting a new game, it is best to catch your Pokemon in the beginning of the game so that you can EV train them.
Anyways, that's the best I can do on a mini-guide. I hope it helps! Just take these tips into consideration, and before too long, you will have yourself the "perfect" Pokemon team. =)

No, instead there is a Team Galactic.
It is always a good idea to have a team that has various different types, strengths and weaknesses. This way you will be able to anticipate for any Pokemon that comes your way and you will be able to choose the Pokemon that has the tactical advantage in your team.
