What are the different type Mac os?

Well, there's classic Mac OS (Mac OS 1 -> Mac OS 9), and then there's Mac OS X (Mac OS 10.0 -> Mac OS 10.6 (to be released in 2 days)).If you're wondering what kind of editions there are, like how Windows has Basic, Premium, Ultimate, etc, there are two: Client and Server. Client is what is usually used, but Server is if you need to do special internet related activities, such as hosting a website.Client is $129 (Leopard)Server is $1000, I believe (Leopard)Again, Client is the primary version (it is often just referred to as Mac OS X, not Mac OS X Client), and Server is strictly for computers that need server-like capabilities, so it is often regarded. Many people will say that there is only one version of Mac OS X, referring to Mac OS X Client.

When installing snow leopard on something virtualbox do you have to enter a serial number im buying the disk from apple?

No Mac OS X Client operating system has ever needed a serial number. However all the server variants of Mac OS X do require a serial number, up to but not including 10.7 Lion Server (which authenticates itself against the app store instead). However, before Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, the only version of Mac OS X that was licensed for virtual machines was Snow Leopard Server, so you my have difficulty installing Snow Leopard client version into a Virtual Machine.

What can be used on Linux to provide file and print services?

CUPS is the de-facto network print service for Linux and Mac. Certain windows versions can connect to it also (unless you have XP home or some other crippled version) Native Linux file transfers might occur over HTTP (Web server) FTP (FTP server) scp (ssh server) NFS (NFS 'network file system' server) SAMBA (Samba file and print service for Windows, also works as a client for win servers) Of the five, NFS is probably the preferred Linux file server (especially in a Linux/mac/Unix only environment), because you can mount the server directory on the client and it will appear as a local directory. For true compatibility with windows, there is one answer to both questions: SAMBA. Samba uses the same Small Message Block (SMB) protocol that is native to Windows clients. It is a Linux and Mac implementation of NetBios, NT File Server, NT Print Server, and Active Directory server and client all rolled into one.
