It is not the size of the harddrive that allows the PS3 to play the PS2 games or even a method to tell whether they can, but the presence of 4 USB ports that will allow you to identify a PS3 that is able to play PS2 games and is Backward Compatible
The 20 GB PS3 could play PS2 games and so could the 60 GB model that was released with it and those machines are called the first generation PS3 Models. The second Generation PS3 model were the 60 GB Model and the 80 GB model and while they could play the PS2 games it was based on Partially software-based PS2 emulation while the earlier models were Hardware-based PS2 emulation. These 1st and 2nd generation PS3 models all included 4 USB ports and also had Flash memory card readers. The 3rd generation of PS3 models had the 40 GB, the 80 GB, and the 160 GB Harddrives but only 2 USB ports and do not play PS2 games with backward compatibility. The fourth Generation of PS3s are the 120 GB and 250 GB PS3 slim model which do not play PS2 games with Backward Compatibility. All PS3 models play PlayStation 1 Games and do so through software emulation.
This was an earlier answer that didn't really answer the question
Isn't matter about gigabytes (This is the correct spelling by the way)
Gigabytes is an amount of memory in which something can hold.
As an example: a PS2 had an 8mb (Megabyte) and There is 1000 Megabytes to a gigabyte and a ps3 has 30, 60 or 80 gigabytes. So there is 80,000 megabytes in a ps3
Yes confusing and hope it helped
The fourth Generation of PS3s are the 120 GB and 250 GB PS3 slim model which do not play PS2 games with Backward Compatibility. All PS3 models play PlayStation 1 Games and do so through software emulation.
You only can play PS2 games on the First models of the PS3 Fat most of the 80 GB models and all of the 160 GB Fat models do not play PS2 games. The only ones that do are the 60 GB model and the 80 GB model with the 4 USB ports. 80 GB PS3s with only 2 USB ports do not play PS2 games even if they are the Fat Ones. yeah you can but only the ps3 fat not the slim , and you can also play ps1 games on ps3 fat ( remember only ps3 fat ) .
It depends on the PlayStation Model the first generation of PS3 could play most of the PS2 games and the second Generation of PS3 models played 97% of the PS3 games. The following information describes which PS3 models were each generation and why they is a difference in how many games they can play: The 20 GB PS3 could play PS2 games and so could the 60 GB model that was released with it and those machines are called the first generation PS3 Models. The second Generation PS3 model were the 60 GB Model and the 80 GB model and while they could play the PS2 games it was based on Partially software-based PS2 emulation while the earlier models were Hardware-based PS2 emulation. In short, the 250GB PS3 Slim console WILL play PS1 games but WILL NOT play PS2 games. No PS3 model with 2 USB ports will play PS2 games and can not be made to play them through hardware or software updates or any other changes The 120 GB and 250 GB are older models of PS3 Slim and the new Slim Model PS3s still do not Play PS2 games, but have 160 GB and 320 GB harddrives and sell for $250 and $300 in the USA Every PS3 will play PS1 games. Only the 20GB, 60GB, and the early 1st 80GB PS3s will play PS2 games. They all had 4 USB ports
Not being able to play PS2 games is not a new situation for the PS3. The models before the PS3 slim could not play PS3 games either. Most people do not realize it, but there are new PS3 slim models released in May 2010 in the same 120 GB and 250 GB harddrive size. Then there were 2 sets of 160 GB and 320 GB models released. There is even talk of a new Super Slim 500 GB Model for the 2012 holiday season. Why they had backward compatibility in the beginning is that in spite of the huge cost to make backward compatibility possible for the PS3 they had little or no choice because there were so few PS3 games when they released the PS3. The first models were sold for a huge loss in spite of the high prices of the units. The first PS3 models also did not play every game and Sony was unable to make the designers and developers adapt the games to the PS3. Production costs have been lowered and the PS3 slim 120 GB model now sells for half that (USA retail $299.99) of the original PS3. There is no longer a shortage of PS3 game titles. There are over 1,000 PS3 games available with many more already in the release process. The are also 200 PS3 move titles. You can purchase pre owned PS3 games for under $5 at retail outlets, yet many go unsold. Once popular PS3 games in new condition are being sold new for only $20 or less. The PS2 games are really outdated when compared to currently released PS3 games let alone what is in the future for new PS3 games being developed. see related links The 20 GB PS3 could play PS2 games and so could the 60 GB model that was released with it and those machines are called the first generation PS3 Models.
