Not being able to play PS2 games is not a new situation for the PS3. The models before the PS3 slim could not play PS3 games either. Most people do not realize it, but there are new PS3 slim models released in May 2010 in the same 120 GB and 250 GB harddrive size. Then there were 2 sets of 160 GB and 320 GB models released. There is even talk of a new Super Slim 500 GB Model for the 2012 holiday season. Why they had backward compatibility in the beginning is that in spite of the huge cost to make backward compatibility possible for the PS3 they had little or no choice because there were so few PS3 games when they released the PS3. The first models were sold for a huge loss in spite of the high prices of the units. The first PS3 models also did not play every game and Sony was unable to make the designers and developers adapt the games to the PS3. Production costs have been lowered and the PS3 slim 120 GB model now sells for half that (USA retail $299.99) of the original PS3. There is no longer a shortage of PS3 game titles. There are over 1,000 PS3 games available with many more already in the release process. The are also 200 PS3 move titles. You can purchase pre owned PS3 games for under $5 at retail outlets, yet many go unsold. Once popular PS3 games in new condition are being sold new for only $20 or less. The PS2 games are really outdated when compared to currently released PS3 games let alone what is in the future for new PS3 games being developed. see related links
The 20 GB PS3 could play PS2 games and so could the 60 GB model that was released with it and those machines are called the first generation PS3 Models. The second Generation PS3 model were the 60 GB Model and the 80 GB model and while they could play the PS2 games it was based on Partially software-based PS2 emulation while the earlier models were Hardware-based PS2 emulation. These 1st and 2nd generation PS3 models all included 4 USB ports and also had Flash memory card readers. The 3rd generation of PS3 models had the 40 GB, the 80 GB, and the 160 GB Harddrives but only 2 USB ports and do not play PS2 games with backward compatibility. The fourth Generation of PS3s are the 120 GB and 250 GB PS3 slim model which do not play PS2 games with Backward Compatibility. All PS3 models play PlayStation 1 Games and do so through software emulation.

No the new PS3 slim can not play PS2 games. To make the PS3 profitable and have it quit selling for a loss Sony stopped making PS3s that could play PS2 games long before the release of the PS3 slim. The only reason you could ever play PS2 games on the first PS3s was the game catalog for the PS3 was next to nothing. Once the catalog of games increased they dropped the ability to play PS2 games.

The PS3 slim and most of the fat PS3s do not play PS2 games and there is nothing that will change that. If you do not have a PS3 with a Card reader and 4 USB ports you will never be able to play PS2 games on it, except the few PS2 games sold at the Playstation store and already converted into PS3 games
