Tails sees him and they go back home.

Does Light Gaia die in sonic unleashed?
No. He goes back into his cycle of sleeping in the planet's core with Dark Gaia. In the actual gameplay he stays with Sonic, but that's because, technically, the last continent isn't restored, so he can't go back yet, if you catch my drift.

Eggman catches sonic and drains the power of the chaos emeralds to split the world into 7 pieces and unleash "Dark Gaia". Sonic turns into a weird dumb "werehog" at night, but turns back into normal sonic in the daylight. The game is pretty bad, except for the day levels, where sonic is really sonic... best 7 levels I ever played. But you have to play the 35 or whatever dumb levels just to play the good levels. X (
