Just look at what it is showing. The clock only shows if it is day or night, it's only really of any use when you are deep underground, ie, you could choose to mine while it is night time, using the clock to see when it is day before heading back up.

first you have to get into the tower in rock ridge, then you go all the way to the end and get on the ladder then, without falling, you make your way to the clock, grease it up [only the middle gears] and you get the clock going! it's really quite simple once you get the hang of it, DON'T GIVE UP!

You have to put it in an item frame by right clicking on it with the clock. It's the same with survival.
In order to hang a clock on a wall without ruining the wallpaper, utilising command strips would be your best bet. Alternatively, you could utilise monkey or hurricane hooks.
