Originally clocks were simply intended for you to carry them in your inventory, you could see if it was light or dark by just looking at it, useful for when you're mining during the night.
However now you can create an Item Frame and put that on the wall, and then place the clock on the item frame, making it into a wall clock.

You have to put it in an item frame by right clicking on it with the clock. It's the same with survival.
In order to hang a clock on a wall without ruining the wallpaper, utilising command strips would be your best bet. Alternatively, you could utilise monkey or hurricane hooks.
