A good way to get iron is to dig a hole underneath you two wide so that if you come across a natural cavern, which you want to do, you won't fall to your death. Make sure you leave some kind of trail when exploring because you may get lost. If you do just make a tower by jumping and placing while digging above yourself and then that will get you to the surface.
