This depends on the version your playing first of all second of all to get a chaos emerald you need to reach the special stage in each zone if i remember correctly and i haven't done this in awhile but there is a specific stage in each zone that contains the chaos emerald it should be either the 2nd or 3rd one to reach the special stage you may have to do one of the following: Get all the red stars or finish the stage with more that 50 rings. At the special stage you need to collect colored spheres in the DS version collect the number they tell you to reach the next part of the special stage you must collect the number of colored spheres it tells you 3 times to get the chaos emerald.
