A Male Pokémon will have this symbol ♂ next to their name and a Female Pokémon will have this symbol ♀ next to their name. This will not be available for the 1st Generation of games which are Pokémon Red, Pokémon Green, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow because genders had not been programmed at that point in time. The Pokémon that do not have those symbols are classified as Genderless Pokémon.
For Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver and Pokémon Crystal for the Gameboy Color, the male/Female symbols will be after their HP counter while in the Battle Screen.
