His name is made referenced in an episode in the English version when Jaden duels a lab chimpanzee, the scientist says the ape's name is Wheeler. The monkey, itself, is also a reference to Joey, since Kaiba dubbed Joey as "The Dueling Monkey".Joey is not the monkey itself, but the monkey is made in reference to Joey.

No because if you recall Yugi made a brief appearance in GX in the beginning and also if you recall watching an 5Ds a guy who looks like Joey Wheeler shows up and everyone asks if it is THE original Joey so they weren't dead because Yugi and Joey were the same age if not Joey was older.

Joey Wheeler (Katsuya Jounouchi in the original Japanese series) is never shown dying in either the anime or the manga series of Yu-Gi-Oh! He has several scrapes with death, most notably during the Battle City arc when Malik took control of his mind and forced him to duel Yuugi, with both of them chained to an anchor that would cause the loser of the duel to drown. However, Joey's life was saved by his sister, Serenity (Shizuka Kawai), and he survived to duel again and rank 4th in the Battle City Tournament.
