Yes Sonic does have a range of power and abilities, he is able to travel faster than the speed of sound, he has quick reflexes and a master at hand-to-hand combat, and since Sonic and the Black Knight, he is a master of swordsmanship. He can also use Chaos Control after observing Shadow use the move on multiple occasions.

Not only that, but Sonic is able to harness the powers of various items to transform into alternate forms which his speed and physical abilities are increased. These include transforming into Super Sonic when he uses the Chaos Emeralds, this was first introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, his originally blue fur becomes a golden yellow, his eyes turn an orange red and his quills are upturned.

Using the power of the Super Emeralds combined with the original Chaos Emeralds, Sonic's Super form is enhanced to become Hyper Sonic. His speed and strength are further increased, his fur changes colour rapidly and his eyes are green (This may not be seen as a change now, but back in the Genesis era Sonic's eyes were portrayed as either dark blue or black) Sonic is still reliant on rings to sustain his form. This form only appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles.

Using the power of the World Rings, Sonic is able to transform into Darkspine Sonic, this form increases his speed and strength like his other forms, but unlike the previous ones, he does not need rings to sustain it. Rather, he gathers rings and loses them when hit, like almost any Sonic game, if damage is sustained with zero rings, Sonic dies. This appears in Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Nintendo Wii.

In Sonic and the Black Knight, we are introduced to yet another form of Sonic's power. While harnessing the power of Caliburn and the three sacred swords, Sonic is donned in a golden armour, in this form, Sonic is able to Dodge attacks by rolling left and right and can use his sword to deflect projectile attacks.

Another addition is Sonic's werehog form. This form was introduced in Sonic Unleashed when Eggman absorbed the powers of the Chaos Emeralds while Sonic was still in his Super Form, forcing him out of the transformation. In his werehog form, Sonic has enhanced strength and his arms are able to stretch out long distances. His speed however, seems to be cut down.
