Yes, awhile back, Jagex made the RuneScape classic available for only members. This was because it was used to cause trouble by free players, and Jagex didn't want to work on focusing on the old game. But not just any member can use it, you have to have had an active account from a few years ago before they changed the game. And you have to log in every six months or you lose the ability to play, sadly.

What is the difference between RuneScape Classic and RuneScape 2?

Runescape Classic Has 2D Characters While Runescape 2 Has 3D Characters, you can now only go onto runescape classic if you are a member and have made an account on runescape classic.

How can you play RuneScape classic?

You cannot become a Runescape classic member anymore. You have to be a classic member before the conversion to Runescape 2. The Runescape classic is only available to member. The only ways to play runescape classic is to get a classic account, which is illegal as account sharing/purchase is ban-able and playing on private servers count as third-party, which is also a ban-able offense now, since swiftswitch.

Are there any other versions of RuneScape?

Answer: The current RuneScape is known as RuneScape 2; Jagex still maintains servers with RuneScape 1, now called "RuneScape Classic". I believe you have to be a paying member to access them.

Is there a free RuneScape classic account?

It is unlikely that someone will give their Runescape Classic account away, even the friendliest of people. These accounts are fairly rare now. The Runescape classic is now only available to members on a trial basis, or to accounts created during the classic period. Although, there is one exception. During the year of 2009, members had the chance to become classic enabled, which allows them to access the classic version forever. (At least it seems like it as long as you have membership.) This is quoted from Runescape's site: "Only two types of account can play RuneScape Classic: those who played RuneScape Classic at least once from August 3rd 2005 to February 3rd 2006, and those who played in the two-week open period from 11th November 2009 to 25th November 2009. You must have been a member to have played RuneScape Classic during this period. " Players who are classic enabled will not lose that feature. Although, players may only access the Classic Server with membership. If your membership runs out, you won't be able to access Runescape Classic until you renew your membership. This is quoted from Runescape's news in May 2010: "If your membership lapses, you will not be able to log into Classic again until you become a member again. However, your account remains 'classic enabled' regardless of any membership lapses, so you won't permanently lose your access by letting your membership lapse afterwards - it will return once you become a member again."
