It's not possible, I did a system update - formatting the system doesn't remove the updates just all userdata.
Just updates your DSi to the latest firmware.
After you update the DSi XL, there is no way in removing that update.

All system updates for the Nintendo DSi are provided free of charge.
Go to System Settings. Go to page 4 (to the far right) and tap System Update. You will need an internet connection. Follow the instructions to update the DSi.
After you update the DSi XL, there is no way in removing that update.
It should only take about 3-5 (or less) minutes to update.
There's no way to undo it, as the update overwrites the old firmware. There's no real reason to remove an update as the updates add new features and increase performance, as well as allowing access to the eStore.
