There are two dagannoth mothers, from different quests. They will change colors, indicating specific weaknesses. You need elementary spells (water, air, earth fire) part of the time; if you don't have those, you have to wait until she changes to green (allowing ranged attacks) or orange (allowing melee attacks), so you'll be at a significant disadvantage if you don't use the normal spellbook. I believe that if you don't have a specific spell for the second dagannoth mother, her color may remain stuck at that particular weakness, so you won't be able to defeat her at all.
